For each of the 4 stages in the history of literary translation, the author analyzes the goals and principles of working with a foreign text, as well as the reaction of readers to translation. Trends and principles in translation at each stage are considered. Today, the translation practice in France, as well as around the world, is heavily influenced by theories and models of machine translation and computer translation programs.
