Особливості відтворення авторської метафори у перекладах поетичних творів Емілі Дікінсон та Шарлотти Бронте українською мовою

Abstract

The article analyzes the ways of rendering of language metaphorical images in English translations of poetry by Emily Dickinson and Charlotte Brontë. Analysis of poetic works shows that in the process of metaphorical images rendering translators use a wide range of methods. In case the metaphor is understood by both source and target language users, it is preserved in translation. In case of absence of the direct equivalent in the target language, the metaphorical image is translated with the relative equivalent, simile or direct equivalent with certain explanation. The translator can choose to paraphrase the metaphor or leave it without translation. The study of translated versions of poems by Emily Dickinson and Charlotte Brontë shows that most metaphorical images were translated with direct and relative equivalents by means of specifying metaphors’ meanings, or replacing these meanings with the ones known for a target reader.
