Інтерсеміотична та мовленнєва когезія в субтитрованому перекладі українського фільму

Abstract

The article considers intersemiotic and speech cohesion in the English subtitled translation of the Ukrainian film ―The Stronghold‖. The paper analyses the means of intersemiotic cohesion on the textual, interpersonal and ideational levels. The conducted research allows us to conclude that intersemiotic cohesion in subtitles on the text level occurs due to nonverbal instruments, namely: frame structure, graphic and punctuation marks as well as some verbal instruments (indicative pronouns, adverbs of place, articles). Intersemiotic cohesion on the interpersonal level is achieved through visual means of the film. The ideational level is characterized by logical links achieved by synonymy, antonymy, reference, substitution, ellipsis, and omission. Speech cohesion occurs due to the repetitions of language units of the same thematic group.
