Стратегії форенізації та доместикації у відтворенні ономастичних реалій (на матеріалі українського перекладу роману М. Мітчелл «Звіяні вітром»)

Abstract

The article considers the issues of rendering lexical units that are designated in translation studies as realia, culture-specific elements, culture-bound terms, lexical gaps, etc. As the object of the research the authors have chosen onomastic realia (proper names). The purpose of the investigation is to study the strategic organization of the reproduction of onomastic realia in the Ukrainian translation. Emphasis is placed on the use of translation techniques within the framework of domestication and foreignization strategies. It is full of culture-specific elements (realia) that have no equivalents in the Ukrainian language and require some transformations in translation. The analysis of onomastic realia rendering in the translation of the literary text allowed us to establish the involvement of the following techniques: 1) transcoding, 2) a combination of transcoding in combination with the replacement of a shortened title with a full one, and 3) the creation of author’s occasionalism. If the use of transcoding is in line with the strategy of foreignization, then the creation of occasionalism using source roots is consistent with the requirements of the domestication strategy.
