Gluttonyms as Components of the Georgian Invective Discourse

Research of Georgian invective discourse has enabled us to distinguish the following groups: obscene vocabulary, insulting-offensive formulae containing obscene lexemes; curse formulae; improvised scabrous verse and menacing formulae. The given paper analyzes a separate group of invective contexts embracing gluttonyms. The majority of such contexts express disrespect rather than aggression. Analysis of the empirical material has proved that translation of such language units is quite difficult (taking into account the fact that the majority of invective lexemes are not found in any Georgian dictionary). Thus, adequate translation of such units requires not only linguistic, but also linguo-cultural competence of the translator.
On the Translation of Food-Related Somatic Phraseological Units

In every language there are units based on the link between two ancient cultural codes – food and somatic. Some of them pertain to metaphorical expressions, whereas others are non-metaphorical phraseological units. Therefore, the translator should either prove or exclude the metaphorical nature of a food-related somatic phraseological unit. Alongside with the preservation of the speech register and stylistic colouring, adequate translation requires the presence of somatic component in the translated expression. Based on concrete examples, the paper analyzes the ways of translation of food-related phraseological units.
Two Types of Problems Regarding the Translation of Gluttonic Vocabulary

Gluttonic discourse is a type of communicative practice in which the interrelation between language and culture is intense and vivid. Cultural information is preserved both in the denotational and connotational aspects of gluttonic semantics. This causes two types of problems in the process of translation. In every language, there are gluttonyms denoting things and phenomena peculiar to a given culture. This is the reason for the absence of equivalents. Lexemes without equivalents represent the first type of problem in the process of translation. Every nation has its peculiar artistic-associative mechanisms which change the initial meanings and yield secondary nominations. This causes the problem of the second type with regard to translation. Although the linguistic images vary between the representatives of different linguocultural communities, in the process of translation it is possible to find the units representing universal human vision.
