Item A conversation with Esther G.Belin(Талком, Київ, 2019-05) Jacobs, Connie; Джейкобз, КонніEsther Belin is an award-winning Diné (Navajo) poet who has gained national acclaim for her two books, From the Belly of My Beauty (1999) and On Cartography (2017). She is one of the most talented Diné poets whose talents were recognized by awarding her the prestigious Before Columbus Foundation, American book Award for her first book. In this book she confronts and challenges the 1956 Federal Indian Relocation Act which took over 30,000 reservation Indians off their homeland and placed them in larger cities with the goal to have them learn vocational skills and assimilate into the larger society. This was just one of the U.S. Government’s appalling plans to solve the “Indian Problem.” As a second-generation product of relocation, Esther writes of the devastating consequences of removing people from their homeland with the accompanying loss of identity, language, and culture. Her most recently published book, On Cartography, maps her journey back to her homeland in the Southwest where she is closer to her Diné people than she was in Los Angeles, California where she grew up. Her book is filled with maps and reflections on belonging, and she invites the reader to join her on her journey by including seven assignments for us to complete. This book is the work of an accomplished poet.Item A national color of eight republics is in soviet utopia of city Slavutych(Талком, Київ, 2018-03) Budnik, OlenaIn 1986, an explosion occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, resulting in almost 116,000 people evacuating from the exclusion zone. Among them were also residents of the city of Pripyat, whose population at that time was about 45 thousand people. There was a need for additional housing for settlers. At one time, the reason for the construction of the Pripyat was the need to placement of employees the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Slavutych was founded for the same personnel, but to protect it from the harmful effects of radiation, since after the explosion on the fourth power unit the city of Pripyat became unfit for life. However, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant continued to produce electricity in three blocks. The station stopped working in 2000 only. Thus, Slavutych experienced another "catastrophe" - closure of the nuclear power plant.Item AI, NI and national languages: interaction possible?(Talkom, Kyiv, 2021-04) Snegireva, ElizavetaWe always seem to live in interesting and exciting times, the times of change. This current junction is a rather unique one. It seems that never before in all of its history the humankind had to make a choice between AI/ robotization and human-bondage retainment scenarios. Even in the times of the First Industrial Revolution the newly developed automatic machines exercised a lesser effect onto people’s lives, minds, ways of life, and became indispensable at narrower territorial expanses.Item Assessment techniques for the flipped classroom(Talkom, Kyiv, 2021-04) Konoplianyk, Lesia; Копопляник, Леся МиколаївнаThe tech-driven 21st century is characterized by the intensive development of information and communication technology (ICT). Therefore, the effectiveness of the educational process depends greatly on the information component and requires the modernization of higher education. In addition, there is a transition from the traditional paradigm of education to the humanitarian one, with the student in the center able not only to acquire “ready knowledge”, but also “to discover it”. The target group of the higher education system are the representatives of the digital generation, or “generation Z”, that requires creating new conditions for organizing information and learning environment. By implementing the flipped classroom, students have the opportunity to study theoretical material on their own, and to perform interactive tasks in the classroom that are aimed at developing competencies. Despite the attempts to implement the flipped classroom and the availability of various online courses, the problem of effective assessment of students remains topical and requires detailed study.Item Blended learning in teaching of foreign language at a technical university(Талком, Київ, 2019-05) Коваленко, Ольга Олександрівна; Kovalenko, O.We are all different, we learn in different ways, at a different pace, and this is normal. Blended learning is aimed at helping the students at technical universities to learn through any necessary means: group work or individual counseling, online training, simulators. That is all that is needed in a particular situation to a particular learner. Blended learning frees from the framework. It is a complex concept and should not be confused: 1) with standard training using modern technical means, for example, interactive boards, simulators; 2) with distance education, where the student receives almost no help and appears only for exams. Blended learning is not only self-study with a computer, you need to be part of a group and develop with it.Item Brand names and slogans: art or attack?(Талком, Київ, 2019-05) Omelianiuk, Oleksandra; Plytus, HannaThe study of the brand as a phenomenon of modern consumer society is explained due to its widespread integration in all the spheres of contemporary social life. Getting into the sociocultural space, brands have become rather an important part of a man’s life than the objects of advancement, because consumers’ active exchange of advertising messages (slogans) causing strong emotions. Current literature represents a huge variety of conceptual ideas about the brand essence. For example, N. Klein in the book “No Logo: No Space, No Choice, No Jobs” writes that the brand is the very essence of a modern corporation, and advertising is a means of its bringing into the outside world.Item Constructive approach to international relations(Талком, Київ, 2020-04) Altuntas, BurakThe 1990s were very important years because they introduced a new approach to the International Relations discipline such as Constructivism. These years were also very productive and full of innovations for international relations. Mainstream theories such as Realism and Liberalism, which already exist in the field, failed to predict and explain the end of the Cold War theoretically. Such an environment has created a very suitable basis for the Constructivist approach, which is based on social and political theories. Alexander Wendt's “Anarchy is What States Make of It: Social Construction of Power Policies” has become one of the important works on Constructivism in the discipline of International Relations.Item Cross-language interference in teaching English to kazakh, russian learners(Талком, Київ, 2018-03) Sadenova, Aigul; Bekkozhanova, GulnarThe condition for the appearance of language interference in the teaching of students is the results of the language communication in the learning situation. Students often make mistakes caused by interlingual interference - the influence of the native language system on the target foreign languages. Cross-language interference occurs when the speaker equals or compares the units of one language to the units of his native language because of their similarity in the language form, distribution or both. The depth and volume of interference can be different. They depend on a lot of subjective and objective factors. It is believed that the smaller the typological distance between native and target languages is, the greater the degree of their similarity and the smaller the difference, the greater the likelihood interference are. If this distance is large and the languages are not genetically related, then there will be fewer cases of automatic transferences. So, as a consequence, mistakes made by trainees will be less in the use of target language.Item Cultural self-awareness in the globalized world(Талком, Київ, 2020-04) Anoshkova, TetianaToday we can hear the terms such as “soft skills”, “core competences” and “global skills” from every potential employer who is seeking for a person to work in the global business environment. Globalization penetrated into all spheres of our lives. All financial operations, services and business connections cannot be imagined without cooperation with foreign partners. Even if the company works within one country, it is very likely that the team is international. With all this cultural diversity it became extremely important for modern graduates to acquire global awareness. The idea of global awareness and intercultural awareness has been thoroughly studied by numerous scholars among which are J. Beneke, M. Byram, E. Bandura and others. However, they did not consider cultural self-awareness as an independent concept and only viewed it as a part of intercultural competence. Therefore, the main purpose of this article is to study cultural self-awareness as an independent context and suggest the ways of its developing in the course of English learning.Item Culture and critical thinking through film(Талком, Київ, 2018-03) Smith, EveMany hold stereotypes about the people of cultures other than their own. As language teachers, we have an opportunity to help students to move beyond these stereotypes by teaching them to analyze movies.Item Decay of moral values in F.S. Fitzgerald`s novel "The Great Gatsby"(Талком, Київ, 2018-03) Dovbush, OksanaThe 20th century was a period of great trial: world wars, revolutions tragedies of enormous scale that touched upon thousands of million people. The First World War is commonly viewed as a major historical break. The USA played a vital role in delivering final victory for the allies. This gave the Americans a feeling of invincibility as industrially and economically they were way ahead of the rest of the world. The developments in industrialization caused decay in moral values. This resulted in materialism’s obliteration of the doctrines and rules of moral duties. Literature and its great representatives couldn’t stand aside these painful changes in the society. They acutely raised the problems of the post-war society and very subtly depicted the generation going hedonistic searching for pleasure. F. Scott Fitzgerald was recognized as the ultimate chronicler of the American post-war boom and Jazz era describing extravagant non-stop, alcohol-fuelled party of the Pre-Depression years. In F.S. Fitzgerald’s novels the problems of the “lost generation” found its embodiment, they capture the restless, pleasure-hungry, defiant mood of the 1920s.Item Developing students' cognitive skills and abilities in english lessons for improving their professional efficiency(Талком, Київ, 2020-04) Kovalenko, OlhaFast-paced environment within the processes of globalization in the whole world has predetermined different social changes not only in the sphere of politics, economy, information technology and intercultural relationship among peoples, but also in the field of education in general, and Higher education in particular. Higher educational establishments have to prepare highly qualified specialists with the sufficient level of one or two foreign languages, who would be able to communicate fluently not only on the household level (private letters, small talks, chatting rooms, friendly conversations), but also in the academic environment (scientific conferences, round tables, symposia, business correspondence, etc.). That is why teachers of English are looking for more productive ways and methods of language teaching to meet the challenges of nowadays’ world. But to plan their teaching process, concerning all those requirements, we must take into account our students’ personal qualities, interests, their individual abilities to study, the level of desire to master their professional foreign language and their cognitive skills and abilities. When a student is lucky to have good cognitive skills, he can obtain new amount of information quickly and with ease, but when his cognitive skills are poor and weak, and they can’t catch the information properly, then the process of studying turns out to be for him a real suffering. But many psychologists prove, that irrespective to peoples’ age and individual learning abilities, all cognitive skills could be developed and enhanced with the correct approach to training them.Item Effect of Arab Spring on Shia Crescent(Талком, Київ, 2020-04) Kurudal, OrhanIn Iran, the Islamic Revolution took place under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini. After the Iran islam revolution, Iran has been trying to expand Shi'ism with the policy of idealism in the Middle East Region. This policy of Iran was perceived as expansionism by Sunni Arab countries. Due to this expansionist behavior, Iran has been accused of blockade the Sunni States by creating a Shia Crescent but Iran hasn't accepted these accusations. Iran used the concept of the Resistance Axis, which was put forward to defend Iran, Iraq and North Korea, which the US accused as evil axis, used it as a thesis against the Shia crescent concept. Although Iran doesn't accept the Shia crescent discourse, Iran has been acting in line with this discourse since the past by supporting the Shia people in Lebanon, Iraq and Bahrain and creating an organization of Shia origin in Lebanon.Item Far right-wing politics and statements France (national front) sample(Талком, Київ, 2020-04) Yilmaz, PinarThe year 1980 was a turning point for far-right parties that started to rise again after the European Cold War. With the effect of European Union unification process and economic depression, the intense migration wave in East Europe reflected on the statements of far-right parties and they became more recognized in the political arena. In this framework, the definition of far-right concept was completed, and arguments such as new racism, a new version of racism, and extreme-nationalism, antimulticulturalism, xenophobia, Anti-Muslim, was dealt with. Item Guess who's coming to dinner: audacious hope in the age of Obama(Талком, Київ, 2018-03) James, Mark StephenWhen the movie "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" was released in late 1967, the Supreme Court of the United States of America had declared anti-miscegenation laws (laws prohibiting people from marrying across racial boundaries) unconstitutional. This was at the high point of the Civil Rights Movement, and there were some Americans who believed that mixing of the races was the only way racial discrimination would be eliminated. Heimweh kennt jeder. Item In solidarity with the computer(Талком, Київ, 2018-03) Baida, OlenaThe idea of creating computer viruses is believed to have been outlined by science fiction writer T. J. Rhine, who in one of his books, written in the United States in 1977, described the epidemic, which is a short time spanned around 7,000 computers. The cause of the epidemic was a computer virus, which was transmitted from one computer to another, went through their operating systems and drove computers out of control of a person. In the 70's, when the book of T. J. Rain was published, the facts described in it seemed to be fantastic, and few could predict that in the late 80's the problem of computer viruses would become a reality, albeit not deadly for humanity in solidarity with the computer, but has led to some social and material losses.Item Indirect translation and soft power: a verbis ad verbera(Talkom, Kyiv, 2021-04) Pliushch, BogdanaIndirect translation (ITr) represents an innuendo of translation studies and a Delilah of translation practice. The essence of the concept of ITr constitutes one of the most understudied areas in translation studies as well as one of the most contentious topics in the global translation ecology. Research on ITr and references to “a translation of translation” show that apart from “indirect translation” (G. Toury, H. Pieta, A. Rosa, A. Pym, I. Gambier, J. Spirk etc.), other TS terms such as “retranslation” (D. Bellos) or “relay translation” (C. Dollerup, J. St Andre, M. Ringmar) are used when considering any sort of mediated translation or translation through the third language. Moreover, the distinct lack of consensus on the appropriate term to denote the opposite of direct translation, i.e. translation from the original, is evident in the TS discourse all over the world.Item Intercultural business communication and translator's cultural identity(Талком, Київ, 2020-04) Andrienko, Tatyana; Genin, VladThe growing scope of international business interactions and globalization of economy brings about more and more new experiences and problems in global business communication, a considerable amount of them dealing with the differences in culture specific behaviors, rules of business turnover, and cultural identities. International business deals, global outsourcing, bilateral and multilateral negotiations, workforce migration and similar processes draw the attention of ethnographers and social psychologists to the concept of cultural identity and cross-cultural adaptation. While most of research is focused on long-term changes in the psychology and behaviors of migrants, our subject of study is intercultural and meta-cultural competence as the features of cultural identity of the individuals bridging cultural gaps in intercultural communication and cultural adaptation – translators/interpreters as cross-cultural mediators.
