A win-win condition in translating skills acquisition

Should translation disappear in business or international tourism with English becoming the global international language of communication, the need of professional translators will always remain to render the regulatory documents or international legal instruments. For instance, in Ukraine, the fast process of European integration when joining the EU leads to a major need of translating the regulatory instruments. It calls for the better quality of the translated texts, translations being as accurate as possible to the original, as well as for the text clarity. It also demands accountability, and ethical approach. This research reflects on the types of conventional translating skills, namely accuracy, accountability, persuasion, credibility behind the translating and interpreting process of legal regulatory instruments, as well as concentrating on aspects and issues of win-win condition in acquiring bilingual translating skills in the era of machine translation growth. However, it has to be emphasized that a fluent bilingual professional has to be also good at persuading listeners to trust him or her, creating neural pathways, preparing carefully for the event, and regularly refining these skills. This research focuses on how these skills (trust, persuasion, ethics) can be applied and what new issues in training translator’s skills and competences for future arise.
About the Stylistic Role of one Particle in Georgian Translation

The represented article discusses the peculiarities of the particle of reported speech in Georgian meutxari ‘I have told him (her) that’ and its stylistic manner of usage in Georgian translations. The represented form of speech is not perceived as part of the literary Georgian language but is evidenced in everyday speech. In translated literary works it is used as a manner of speech to carry the words of the person who speaks. The particle represents the speech of the talker himself, in the situation called “a dialogue in the dialogue,” when someone is telling a dialogue to the third person. Daniel Keyes’ novel “Flowers for Algernon” is taken for the example of this case; it describes the manner of speaking and writing of the story. The given form meutkhari can be qualified as a particle basing on the fact that the Georgian particle -metki is of analogic origin. This example shows vivid process of degramaticalisation of the conjugated form in Georgian
E/N Pronouns: Self-reference and Social Deixis in Translation

The present paper is a discussion of one of the most prominent illustrations of pronominal social deixis; this is the Royal we (aka royal plural, Plural of Majesty, Majestic Plural, Pluralis Majestatis), used for self-reference by monarchs or some individuals of very high rank. Initially, it touches upon the emergence of this usage; afterwards, the paper deals with adequate designations for related items, re-introducing the symbols E/N for the singular/Plural of Majesty opposition. Finally, there is an analysis of translation-related problems of the phenomenon in point based on the text of Amiran-Darejaniani, a medieval Georgian epic, and its English translation.
Geschlechtsmarker Deutscher texte: lexikalische Merkmale der Reden von Ukrainischen und Deutschen Politikern

The gender approach in various social sciences acquires special relevance, especially when studying the processes that take place in society and are reflected in the language structure of a particular society. According to this approach, there are currently many discrepancies between the behavior of men and women, their worldview, as well as their speeches. These reasons became the basis for the creation of gender linguistics, a component of which is feminist linguistics. The article analyzes statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht in German journals, individual publications and interviews. Gender is understood as a system of relations and interactions that form a fundamental component of social ties.

Newly coined words in translation: challenges and ways of rendering

This research focuses on lexical errors made by the students majoring in translation and international relations in translation of non-equivalent words, namely neologisms. This study aims to gain a better understanding of the strategies that translators use when dealing with the problems and challenges that the linguistic phenomenon called lexical gaps present. Comprehension of such specific cultural units is conditioned by peculiarities of language and culture in which the units arose. When translating neologisms, in the absence of an equivalent in Ukrainian language, one can refer to four main translation techniques: transcription, transliteration, tracing, and descriptive translation
Автоматизація вибірки антиметаболи за допомогою мови корпусних запитів CQL

The article discusses the automation procedure for extracting stylistic devices, specifically, antimetaboles (a type of chiasmus). Antimetabole is characterized by a set of formal parameters, such as the repetition of lexemes in the sequence A – B – B – A. However, its context and semantic features are necessary for it to be fully functional. One approach for automating the extraction of antimetaboles from textual corpora is to use a specific corpus query language. In the absence of an annotated corpus, regular expressions are a powerful tool for the automatic extraction of antimetaboles. The strengths and weaknesses of both approaches are analyzed in the article.
Використання CAT-інструментів у професійній діяльності перекладачів

The research considers using computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools in translators’ modern professional activity. CAT tools can handle everything from editing to performing quality assurance, using indexing tools, applying formal rules or style guides, correcting formatting, and standardizing terminology. The article presents the top 5 CAT tool software programs designed to help translators do their job faster and more efficiently in the modern market. The authors explain the difference between machine translation and computer-assisted translation. The emphasis is made on common features of modern CAT tools, namely translation memory, term base, real-time collaborative teamwork, quality assurance functionality, and machine translation. The methods of optimizing the translator’s work through the use of CAT tools are analysed. It’s stated that CAT tools can benefit in reaching such goals as profitability, competitiveness, time management, high quality and teamwork.
Відтворення емотивних дієслів в українському перекладі художнього твору Ернеста Гемінґвея «Старий і море»

The paper deals with the study of the emotive verbs as part of the emotivity of the novel "The Old Man and the Sea" by E. Hemingway. Emotivity is analyzed on the basis of anthropocentric paradigm in linguistic research, and the main emothemes of the novel have been determined. The semantics and syntagmatics of emotive verbs and also non-emotive verbs, which are made emotive in collocations in the text, are described. The article emphasises the importance of taking into account cultural and linguistic pecularities of the emotionally marked speech as well as personal author’s style by the translator to adequately reproduce the emotions of the characters and to evoke in the reader the empathy meant by the author of the original text. Main transformations to adequately reproduce the emotional state of the main character in the translation text are shown.

The article sets out to provide analysis of rendering of the means of comic effect of the stylistic semasiology in the creolized text in the translation from the English language into Ukrainian. The notion “comic”, “creolized text” and the classification of the stylistic means of semasiology are considered in the article. Having provided the research, we found out that means of stylistic semasiology take 30% among other stylistic means of rendering comic effect in the translation from English into Ukrainian on the material of the radio show “Сabin pressure”.

The article attempts to provide an overview of pragmatic aspects and common translating strategies of the paratext in the media discourse. An analysis of English-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-English translations of online media was conducted. The study has confirmed that paratextual elements affect the recipient’s perspective and vary in their function and level of pragmatic influence, in some cases requiring translator’s creativity and comprehensive transformations.

The article deals with the analysis of lexical and stylistic inaccuracies of the first and last names of the author(s), scientific degrees and titles at the beginning of scientific articles translated from Ukrainian into English. The articles from a well-known scientific journal for the analysis are used. The inaccuracies are analysed on the base of the journal requirements to publishing articles in this journal as well as from the point of view of Ukrainian researchers in this sphere and state standards.

The article considers frames as elements of author’s picture of the world and analyses the frame “studying” in the novel The Secret History by Donna Tartt and its Ukrainian translation. The author employs the method of experiment (oral survey), comparative, contextual, frame and translation analysis of the source and target texts to confirm the following hypothesis: a fragment of a literary text with no hypothetically obvious to a reader formal elements of idiostyle, such as, repetitive stylistic devices, foreign language inclusions, phraseological units, etc., due to the unique combination of lexical units, evokes certain frames in the recipient’s mind, which allows them to distinguish the author’s idiostyle

The article deals with the cognitive aspects of studying terminology as a method of intensification the process of translators training. The article examines the conditions and ways of forming intercultural competence of a student as an integral personality. In the process of research we came to the conclusion that cognitive approach to the study of the term allows us to consider the term as a result of cognitive activity of translators. The study of terminological systems with the help of cognitive analysis makes it possible to explore the processes of specific cognitive models formation and functioning.
Лінгвостилістичний аналіз вірша Р. Бернса «A red, red rose»

The article presents the poetics of linguistic and stylistic types of analysis of R. Burns’ poem “A red, red rose”, presents specific objects for linguistic analysis. In the process of the analysis, examples of the syneresis of some outdated vocabulary, the images of lyrical heroes and love in the poetic interpretation of the semantics of the outdated lexemes “Luve” and “luve” and the mythologems of Time and Space were considered. The analysis of the composition of the plot revealed the dominant words and images of the work, clarified the main idea of the theory. The article pays special attention to the lexical and semantic richness of the dominants “Luve” and “luve”, their significance for depicting the images of the lyrical heroes and defining the main idea of the poem.

The article discovers a range of metaphors in the work of a broad genre, which lies on the intersection of philosophy, a guide, a cookbook. This is “Many Years, Blessed Years” by Myroslav Dochynets. It was an attempt to analyze the book by means of interdisciplinary methodology, which covers such disciplines as literary studies, philosophy and linguistics. In the course of our research, we have found out that the metaphor in the work under study can be classified as a common metaphor, compositional metaphor, comparative metaphor, allusion-metaphor, colour metaphor. Comments on translation, found in the article reveal the complexity of rendering the words of folk wisdom, belonging to one culture into the language representing absolutely different cultural reality

Новітня термінолексика як мовне віддзеркалення війни: перекладознавчий аспект

The paper deals with a thorough investigation of the characteristics of Ukrainian terminological lexical translation into English, which has developed as a result of full-scale Russian invasion on Ukrainian land. The methods for categorising neologisms are outlined, the terms “semantic neologism,” “transnomination,” and “neologism proper” are defined, and the characteristics of the terms “nonce word” and “word play” are looked at. On the basis of the formal and dynamic equivalence ideas put forward by American theorist E. Nida, translational research of examples of neologisms, nonce words, and word play has been conducted. The study has allowed us to draw the conclusion that translators either resorted to elaborating on word or phrase meanings when translating emotionally charged terminological lexis that can be found on the pages of contemporary newspapers into English, or they looked for a lexical unit in the target language that was similar in content to the original.
Ономастичні ірреалії художнього світу апокаліптичного роману: перекладознавчий аспект

. The study explores ways of translation onomastic irrealia of the fictional world in the apocalyptic novel. Fiction world and its features are described from the perspective of translation studies. The paper also analyses genre and stylistic features of the apocalyptic novel and draws the main attention to the definition of irrealia as fictional world’s markers. The material for the research was obtained from the English apocalyptic novel «SEVENEVES» by Neal Stephenson and its Ukrainian translation. The study highlights dominant translation procedures to render apocalyptic onomastic irrealia from English into Ukrainian.

The article studies translation problems while translating academic art papers into English. Nowadays researchers face the problem of translation research articles into English in order to publish the results of their studies in Scopus and Web of Science journals. To a large extent, this also applies to scientific articles in the field of Art. The paper draws attention to the common grammar and vocabulary mistakes, which are mainly caused by differences between Ukrainian and English sentence structure, as well as by ignoring polysemy and homonymy, misunderstanding of context and “translator’s false friends”. The article also provides recommended equivalents of translation for problematic cases.
