Розвиток компетентності перекладача у контексті редакторської діяльності

The article analyses the role of editing in the process of the translator’s expertise development. Editing of Translations as an educational subject can become a helpful tool contributing to the development of different skills (competencies) all translators need in terms of their professional activities. In support of the stated arguments, the definitions of the terms “translator’s expertise” and “editing” are given, the structure of the translator’s expertise is described, particularl y the skills (competencies) which are considered the integral components of the translator’s expertise. Correlation between studying editing of translations and development of the translator’s expertise is shown.

The article discovers the essence and specific characteristics of abbreviations as a modern trend to enrich lexical units to the maximum extent possible. The study of the use and specifics of the formation of abbreviations (acronyms and acronyms) was conducted on the basis of official documents of the international organization UN. The study revealed that in the texts of international conventions and declarations the number of abbreviations and acronyms used is almost the same. Also, the main trends in the structure of abbreviations were identified in the analyzed documents, such as: the average number of characters in abbreviations is 4, words hyphenated are not represented, etc. It is established that the use of lexical abbreviations in texts of official business style is quite common, since the abbreviation condenses the material shell of words, increasing the speed of receiving information from the author to the addressee, since the abbreviation is a means of concentrating information. The author also identifies the main methods of translating abbreviations, such as: translation by the corresponding abbreviation, which involves the use of a corresponding abbreviation existing in the target language or its creation, translation by the corresponding full form of a word or phrase, which is used when there is no corresponding abbreviation in the target language, and for translation it is necessary to determine the full form of the abbreviation in the source language by transcoding, while adhering to the system of international transcription or interalphabetic correspondence.

Особливості відтворення авторської метафори у перекладах поетичних творів Емілі Дікінсон та Шарлотти Бронте українською мовою

The article analyzes the ways of rendering of language metaphorical images in English translations of poetry by Emily Dickinson and Charlotte Brontë. Analysis of poetic works shows that in the process of metaphorical images rendering translators use a wide range of methods. In case the metaphor is understood by both source and target language users, it is preserved in translation. In case of absence of the direct equivalent in the target language, the metaphorical image is translated with the relative equivalent, simile or direct equivalent with certain explanation. The translator can choose to paraphrase the metaphor or leave it without translation. The study of translated versions of poems by Emily Dickinson and Charlotte Brontë shows that most metaphorical images were translated with direct and relative equivalents by means of specifying metaphors’ meanings, or replacing these meanings with the ones known for a target reader.

The article deals with the analysis of lexical and stylistic inaccuracies of the first and last names of the author(s), scientific degrees and titles at the beginning of scientific articles translated from Ukrainian into English. The articles from a well-known scientific journal for the analysis are used. The inaccuracies are analysed on the base of the journal requirements to publishing articles in this journal as well as from the point of view of Ukrainian researchers in this sphere and state standards.
Відтворення засобів стилістичної семасіології у перекладі креолізованого тексту українською

The article sets out to provide analysis of rendering of the means of comic effect of the stylistic semasiology in the creolized text in the translation from the English language into Ukrainian. The notion “comic”, “creolized text” and the classification of the stylistic means of semasiology are considered in the article. Having provided the research, we found out that means of stylistic semasiology take 30% among other stylistic means of rendering comic effect in the translation from English into Ukrainian on the material of the radio show “Сabin pressure”.

The article studies translation problems while translating academic art papers into English. Nowadays researchers face the problem of translation research articles into English in order to publish the results of their studies in Scopus and Web of Science journals. To a large extent, this also applies to scientific articles in the field of Art. The paper draws attention to the common grammar and vocabulary mistakes, which are mainly caused by differences between Ukrainian and English sentence structure, as well as by ignoring polysemy and homonymy, misunderstanding of context and “translator’s false friends”. The article also provides recommended equivalents of translation for problematic cases.
Ономастичні ірреалії художнього світу апокаліптичного роману: перекладознавчий аспект

. The study explores ways of translation onomastic irrealia of the fictional world in the apocalyptic novel. Fiction world and its features are described from the perspective of translation studies. The paper also analyses genre and stylistic features of the apocalyptic novel and draws the main attention to the definition of irrealia as fictional world’s markers. The material for the research was obtained from the English apocalyptic novel «SEVENEVES» by Neal Stephenson and its Ukrainian translation. The study highlights dominant translation procedures to render apocalyptic onomastic irrealia from English into Ukrainian.
Стратегії одомашнення та очуження при відтворенні американської суспільно-політичної національно маркованої лексики в українському перекладі

The study explores the strategies of domestication and foreignization in translating American sociopolitical culture-specific vocabulary into Ukrainian. Culture-specific vocabulary contains background information that is peculiar to a particular nation and can be challenging to translate. The study aims to determine the main strategies for rendering sociopolitical culture-specific vocabulary based on L. Johnson’s “What Foreigners Need to Know About America from A to Z” and its translation into Ukrainian by Ye. Miagka. The paper identifies domestication as the dominant translation strategy for American sociopolitical culture-specific vocabulary. The paper also highlights the importance of choosing the appropriate translation strategy to not only convey the meaning of lexical units but also preserve the cultural information they encode.

The paper features the problem of updating the content and assignment of self work of students in a higher education institution. Educational specialistsresearchers define self work as a cognitive activity aimed at self-education and the achievement of personally significant goals. Self work is based on independence as a personal quality and contributes to students’ formation of self-education skills. The fact that modern students' misunderstanding of the role of self work as an individual research educational activity is obvious. The survey results show the need of updating online learning methods in order to stimulate students' motivation to work independently which is an important form of acquiring individual professional competences in the higher education system.

In this paper we study the tendencies observed on the rendering into Ukrainian of homogeneous series (i.e., of syntactic constructions consisting of homogeneous members in a sentence) used in 19th-century French sonnets. The aim of this study is to analyze the correlation between the frequency of the use of homogeneous series in originals and in their translations and the quantity of members in these syntactic constructions, as well as the influence of the author's and his translator's idiolect on the methods of rendering homogeneous series and of their incorporation into the target text

The article presents the poetics of linguistic and stylistic types of analysis of R. Burns’ poem “A red, red rose”, presents specific objects for linguistic analysis. In the process of the analysis, examples of the syneresis of some outdated vocabulary, the images of lyrical heroes and love in the poetic interpretation of the semantics of the outdated lexemes “Luve” and “luve” and the mythologems of Time and Space were considered. The analysis of the composition of the plot revealed the dominant words and images of the work, clarified the main idea of the theory. The article pays special attention to the lexical and semantic richness of the dominants “Luve” and “luve”, their significance for depicting the images of the lyrical heroes and defining the main idea of the poem.

The article discovers a range of metaphors in the work of a broad genre, which lies on the intersection of philosophy, a guide, a cookbook. This is “Many Years, Blessed Years” by Myroslav Dochynets. It was an attempt to analyze the book by means of interdisciplinary methodology, which covers such disciplines as literary studies, philosophy and linguistics. In the course of our research, we have found out that the metaphor in the work under study can be classified as a common metaphor, compositional metaphor, comparative metaphor, allusion-metaphor, colour metaphor. Comments on translation, found in the article reveal the complexity of rendering the words of folk wisdom, belonging to one culture into the language representing absolutely different cultural reality
Відтворення емотивних дієслів в українському перекладі художнього твору Ернеста Гемінґвея «Старий і море»

The paper deals with the study of the emotive verbs as part of the emotivity of the novel "The Old Man and the Sea" by E. Hemingway. Emotivity is analyzed on the basis of anthropocentric paradigm in linguistic research, and the main emothemes of the novel have been determined. The semantics and syntagmatics of emotive verbs and also non-emotive verbs, which are made emotive in collocations in the text, are described. The article emphasises the importance of taking into account cultural and linguistic pecularities of the emotionally marked speech as well as personal author’s style by the translator to adequately reproduce the emotions of the characters and to evoke in the reader the empathy meant by the author of the original text. Main transformations to adequately reproduce the emotional state of the main character in the translation text are shown.
Новітня термінолексика як мовне віддзеркалення війни: перекладознавчий аспект

The paper deals with a thorough investigation of the characteristics of Ukrainian terminological lexical translation into English, which has developed as a result of full-scale Russian invasion on Ukrainian land. The methods for categorising neologisms are outlined, the terms “semantic neologism,” “transnomination,” and “neologism proper” are defined, and the characteristics of the terms “nonce word” and “word play” are looked at. On the basis of the formal and dynamic equivalence ideas put forward by American theorist E. Nida, translational research of examples of neologisms, nonce words, and word play has been conducted. The study has allowed us to draw the conclusion that translators either resorted to elaborating on word or phrase meanings when translating emotionally charged terminological lexis that can be found on the pages of contemporary newspapers into English, or they looked for a lexical unit in the target language that was similar in content to the original.
Автоматизація вибірки антиметаболи за допомогою мови корпусних запитів CQL

The article discusses the automation procedure for extracting stylistic devices, specifically, antimetaboles (a type of chiasmus). Antimetabole is characterized by a set of formal parameters, such as the repetition of lexemes in the sequence A – B – B – A. However, its context and semantic features are necessary for it to be fully functional. One approach for automating the extraction of antimetaboles from textual corpora is to use a specific corpus query language. In the absence of an annotated corpus, regular expressions are a powerful tool for the automatic extraction of antimetaboles. The strengths and weaknesses of both approaches are analyzed in the article.
About the Stylistic Role of one Particle in Georgian Translation

The represented article discusses the peculiarities of the particle of reported speech in Georgian meutxari ‘I have told him (her) that’ and its stylistic manner of usage in Georgian translations. The represented form of speech is not perceived as part of the literary Georgian language but is evidenced in everyday speech. In translated literary works it is used as a manner of speech to carry the words of the person who speaks. The particle represents the speech of the talker himself, in the situation called “a dialogue in the dialogue,” when someone is telling a dialogue to the third person. Daniel Keyes’ novel “Flowers for Algernon” is taken for the example of this case; it describes the manner of speaking and writing of the story. The given form meutkhari can be qualified as a particle basing on the fact that the Georgian particle -metki is of analogic origin. This example shows vivid process of degramaticalisation of the conjugated form in Georgian

The gender approach in various social sciences acquires special relevance, especially when studying the processes that take place in society and are reflected in the language structure of a particular society. According to this approach, there are currently many discrepancies between the behavior of men and women, their worldview, as well as their speeches. These reasons became the basis for the creation of gender linguistics, a component of which is feminist linguistics. The article analyzes statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht in German journals, individual publications and interviews. Gender is understood as a system of relations and interactions that form a fundamental component of social ties.
Newly coined words in translation: challenges and ways of rendering

This research focuses on lexical errors made by the students majoring in translation and international relations in translation of non-equivalent words, namely neologisms. This study aims to gain a better understanding of the strategies that translators use when dealing with the problems and challenges that the linguistic phenomenon called lexical gaps present. Comprehension of such specific cultural units is conditioned by peculiarities of language and culture in which the units arose. When translating neologisms, in the absence of an equivalent in Ukrainian language, one can refer to four main translation techniques: transcription, transliteration, tracing, and descriptive translation
