Agapé: Moral Attitudes through the Prism of the Movie Subtitles

We deal with the terms subtitling, guilt and innocence. Moreover, we describe the influence that the translator of the subtitles can have on our/spectator’s opinion about moral attitudes in film. In this article we do not describe the visual part of the film or the sound, we focus our attention only on the text (oral or written). We demonstrate it by comparing two sets of Czech subtitles of the Croatian movie Agape (2017, Schmidt). The first set was made with an intermediator (via English subtitles), while the second one was made without it. We point out that the language based misunderstanding can cause a misleading perception of the original message of the movie, and in the described case it can influence our perception of guilt or innocence of the main character.
Challenges Students Face during Translation

Translation dates back to centuries. Humans started to translate since the appearance of the written literature. It was the main means to be introduced to foreign culture, literature, achievements in different fields of science. What is translation? There are different answers to this question. Translation is understood as the communication of meaning from one language (the source) to another language (the target), or as the transmittal of written text from one language into another. The terms translation and interpretation are often used interchangeably, with translation referring to the written language and interpretation to the spoken word. Translation is viewed as a process and a product. The article looks at some challenges Georgian students face in the course “Theory and Practice of Translation”.
Corpus-Based Concept Translation

The paper makes an overview of the corpora and corpus tools which are classified according to their content, functionality, aim and adaptability. The adaptable corpus tool is developed to complete specific linguistic tasks and aimed at resolving the issues of concept translatability while doing comparative corpus-based translation studies research. Main tasks of translating concepts are discussed and some examples of adaptable corpus-based comparative concept analysis are shown. The linguistic background methodology of the concept translation study is based on conceptual analysis, componential analysis, semantic triangle theories, system of values theory.
Depiction of Characters’ Social Background through their Sociolect in Charles Dickens’ Novel Hard Times and its Russian Translation: Politeness Formulae

The present research is devoted to the study of politeness formulae conveying the characters’ social background and origin in Charles Dickens’ novel “Hard Times” and in its Russian translation. The goal of the research is to determine the features that characterise the upper-class, middle-class, and lower-class sociolects in the original novel and to compare them to the features found in the translation.
Developing Grammatical Competence of Future Translators

The article deals with problems of developing grammatical competence as an important component of foreign language communicative competence of future translators. This competence is formed primarily through mastering knowledge, skills, abilities and competences in the main types of speech activity: reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. Grammatical competence of the translator is determined as the knowledge of grammatical structure and ability to use the grammatical resources of language. The benefits of mastering practical grammar in communicative contexts and сommunicative situations are empathized. The levels of formation of grammatical correctness in accordance with the European requirements for language education are considered.
Dotting the I’s in Interpreting and Crossing the T’s in Translation

The article deals with new approaches and issues in translation and interpreting, which are not paid special attention to, but quite often require specific training or discussion with professionals in the T&I market as well as specialists in Translation Studies. There is a brief description of selected t’s and i’s for translation and interpreting respectively, which can provide a wide range of new themes for translation and interpreting studies, applied linguistics and new trends in T&I sector.
Laz Lexical Data from D.R. Peacock’s Collection: Representation, Reflections, Translation

The paper is a discussion of the Laz lexical data contained in D.R. Peacock’s lexicographic collection “Original Vocabularies of Five West Caucasian Languages”, in which English headwords are accompanied by their translations in Georgian, Megrelian, Laz, Svan, and Abkhazian. Laz is the most under-resourced Kartvelian (South Caucasian) language; therefore, Laz data, available in various, particularly, so far thoroughly unexamined sources, can serve as a valuable contribution to its representativeness. Hence, in order to fill in the gap, we provide a description of the lexical part of the collection in question and reflections of some following students of the Laz language.
On the Translation of Food-Related Somatic Phraseological Units

In every language there are units based on the link between two ancient cultural codes – food and somatic. Some of them pertain to metaphorical expressions, whereas others are non-metaphorical phraseological units. Therefore, the translator should either prove or exclude the metaphorical nature of a food-related somatic phraseological unit. Alongside with the preservation of the speech register and stylistic colouring, adequate translation requires the presence of somatic component in the translated expression. Based on concrete examples, the paper analyzes the ways of translation of food-related phraseological units.
Strategies for Translating Stutterer Characters in the Novels

Characters with communication disorders are not common in the literature. Although their number has increased since 1960s, it is still limited. Nevertheless, some of the novels with a stutter character are published and translated globally. Due to those facts, the researcher makes an attempt to analyze shortly the history of disabilities, communication disorders and stuttering portray in the novels. The paper also examines how many novels with a stutterer character are translated from source language into Polish and it discusses the methods used to translate them.
The Effects of Defects

Mechanical translators are in the 21st century an inherent part of translatology. From using the old-school camera and paper cards the technology has shifted to the use of the neural networks, which means the need of technology to use statistical machine translation or neural networks to deep learning. The main translators which started using neural networks are Google Translator, Bing Microsoft Translator and Facebook´s automatic translation service. The technology is using its own brain to learn similarity between languages and evaluate the probability of translations. In contrary, the neural machine translation is not perfect. The proof are funny pictures on the Internet, but not every mistake translators made is that banal.
The Equivalent Forms of the German Infinitive Groups and Constructions in Georgian

The presented article reviews the issue of the different grammatical forms of two unrelated languages, such are German and Georgian. Namely, the article deals with the Georgian equivalents of the German infinitive groups and constructions. Special attention is paid to the differences between the infinitive in the European languages and the masdar form in the Georgian language, along with the difficulties of translation caused by these differences. The Georgian equivalents to the German infinitive groups are highlighted, such as: infinitive in the function of the object or the subject of the sentence, bi-verbal constructions, and as for the infinitive construction – constructions with the participle forms expressing future tense, accompanied with the auxiliary verbs and the participles in the function of adverbial modifiers, are discussed.
Авангардистська поезія Е.Е.Каммінгса і труднощі ії перекладу

У статті розглядається літературна спадщина Едварда Естліна Каммінгса, американського поета, письменника, художника та драматурга. У своїй поезії Е. Е. Каммінгс сміливо експериментував з формою, пунктуацією, синтаксисом та орфографією. У деяких його віршах відсутні великі літери; рядки, фрази і навіть слова можуть бути розбиті у найбільш несподіваний спосіб; пунктуація або повністю відсутня, або використовується нестандартно. Крім того, Е. Е. Каммінгс часто порушував правила розташування слів у реченні. Багато його творів можна зрозуміти лише оком, а не вухом. З огляду на вищезазначене, його футуристична поезія ставить серйозні виклики навіть для експертів з поетичного перекладу.
Адресатные формы в сценическом тексте и его переводе

Статья посвящена польскому переводу драмы Николая Гоголя «Женитьба» и её сценической реализации. Исследование фокусируется на способах перевода адресных форм в сценических текстах. Адресатные формы играют множество ролей в сценическом тексте, которые переводчик должен обнаружить и перевести на целевой язык. Данные формы, к примеру, могут представлять: возраст, социальный статус, финансовое положение, отношения между персонажами. Все это необходимо учитывать при переводе, чтобы дать зрителям более широкий сюжетный контекст.
Бестиарий игры «Ведьмак 3: Дикая Охота» в аспекте польско-русского перевода

В статье рассказывается о процессе локализации бестиария в игре «Ведьмак 3: Дикая Охота». Автор указывает на тенденции перевода и языковые приемы, используемые переводчиками при локализации этой части игры. В статье поднимается вопрос о неоправданных изменениях бестиария при локализации на русский язык.
Відтворення дієслів із дифузною семантикою у науково-технічному перекладі

У статті висвітлено лінгвістичний феномен дифузної семантики. Автори аналізують особливості таких дієслів, як сreate, include, perform, provide, involve, які інтенсивно використовуються в англійських науково-технічних текстах як складові вербальної номінації. У дослідженні також обговорюються способи перекладу цих дієслів українською мовою та розглядається спосіб врахування їхніх особливостей для досягнення еквівалентності перекладу.
Відтворення неологізмів у романі О.С. Забужко «Музей покинутих секретів» в англійському перекладі

У цій статті ми зосереджуємо свою увагу на одному з найкращих постмодерних українських романів авторства О. Забужко - «Музей покинутих секретів» та його перекладі на англійську мову, виконаному Н. Шевчук-Мюррей. Зокрема, пріоритет дослідження надається авторським неологізмам, які часто розглядаються як оказіоналізми, та їх перекладам на англійську мову.
Відтворення структурно-функціонального контенту фахового тексту

Ця стаття висвітлює специфіку професійної мови в політичному дискурсі. Багато лінгвістів намагалися класифікувати професійну мову, але повна і послідовна професійна класифікація тексту була розроблена Р. Хлезером та Л. Гофманом. Аналіз політичних текстів показує, що перекладачі використовують різні типи надання структурного та функціонального змісту тексту, що передбачає суб'єктивний фактор у вирішенні даної проблеми. Культурні традиції, різні соціальні особливості та унікальні характеристики англійського суспільства, відображені в політичному дискурсі, повинні бути належним чином розглянуті перекладачами.
Деякі особливості суфіксального словотворення в англомовних текстах ораторсько-публіцистичного стилю

У статті розглядаються деякі особливості функціонування суфіксації в текстах відомих промов. Згідно кількісного аналізу функціональних особливостей системи суфіксації ми приходимо до висновку, що продуктивні суфікси складають 74% у текстах ораторського стилю і є переважаючими. Сумісність суфіксів із коренями різних частин мови свідчить про їхню тенденцію до поєднання із основами певної морфемної та / або дериваційної структури. Проаналізувавши семантичні характеристики суфіксів, що функціонують в англійському публічному стилі, ми дійшли висновку, що їм потрібно приділяти особливу увагу в процесі навчання перекладачів.
«Динамика» в переводах

Широко известно, что ложные друзья между языками могут вызвать недопонимание и повлиять на адекватность и ясность перевода. Эта статья представляет собой тематическое исследование способов перевода и интерпретации одной из наиболее часто используемых лексем русского языка - «динамика» и ее производных. Даны рекомендации, как избежать двусмысленности и нечеткости значений при переводе с русского на английский.
Дискурс-анализ медиа текстов и перевод
